I know none of us are rolling in the dough these days, but please consider lightening your pockets just a bit in support of this amazing project. To steal from the Kickstarter:
IN SEARCH OF AVERY WILLARD is a portrait of one of queer art’s most fascinating and elusive innovators.
Broadway photographer, physique artist, gay activist, experimental filmmaker, drag historian, leatherman, pornographer, creator of NY’s first gay newspaper: New York City artist Avery Willard produced a lifetime of historically significant work that has remained widely unseen for decades.
Through rare interviews with collaborators, friends and preeminent film historians, documentarian Cary Kehayan traces Willard’s provocative career from the 1940s through the 1990s.
Featuring never-before-seen archival films & photographs, this revealing documentary short tells the story of a lost trailblazer of the queer art movement - a man who was as ambitious as he was self-sabotaging.
IN SEARCH OF AVERY WILLARD was produced concurrently and in partnership with KEEP THE LIGHTS ON, a new feature film directed by Ira Sachs, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and won the Teddy Award at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
It’s hard to believe that we are only a few weeks into our first wave of submissions, and IN SEARCH OF AVERY WILLARD has already been selected to screen at THE NEW JERSEY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL and many other amazing festivals across the country soon to be announced. We had a remarkable experience making this film and are so grateful to have the opportunity to finally share it with you. However, in order to do so, we need your help!
We’re in the homestretch, but this final leg - the distribution phase - requires funding for travel and exhibition materials that exceeds our micro production budget. We are asking YOU to help IN SEARCH OF AVERY WILLARD reach audiences around the world by making a donation. As a token of our gratitude, we are offering a variety of great rewards for contributors.
On behalf of the entire documentary team, thank you in advance for your generosity and support!
